  5. What is THE BLOCK?
  6. ==================
  7. THE BLOCK is a powerful password protection system for Macintosh computers.

Unlike other password protection systems, it will not accept real passwords. To log in to a computer protected by THE BLOCK you need to go through a two-step process. First you need to type a Password Key, which is a key combination similar to the Finder's Copy or Paste shortcuts [command+c] or [command+v]. The second step is to click with the mouse on the shutdown button on the on-screen dialog or, depending on the preferences you set, to press the "esc" key on your keyboard.

A big part of THE BLOCK's security comes from the illusion that a real password is needed. If intruders are not aware of how THE BLOCK works, they will always choose the wrong approach. If they are aware, THE BLOCK will still be as protective as every other password system because there are many possible Password Keys and there is an option to disable the shift key at startup. A Password Key can consist of any of the four modifiers (command, alt, control or shift) and another key on your keyboard, including the cursor keys, the F-keys and the page navigation keys.

  13. THE BLOCK is US$10 shareware. It is available from Marc Mennigmann's web site and all major Macintosh shareware archives and ftp sites. Version 2.0 is a free upgrade to registered users of any earlier version.

  15. System Requirements: Any Apple Macintosh or clone with at least a 68020 CPU running MacOS System 7.1 or later.

  18. What is new in THE BLOCK 2.0?
  19. =============================
  20. Password Keys can contain multiple modifiers (command, option, control and shift). F-keys, cursor keys or page navigation keys can also be used as part of the Password Key.

  22. The application used to set up the preferences, called "THE BLOCK Setup", has been completely rewritten to be compatible with all Macs running System 7.1.

  24. The entire user interface has been redesigned to make THE BLOCK's settings more intelligible. In particular, the procedure to change the Password Key has been designed to be intuitive and straightforward.

  26. An introduction system was added to prevent first time users from being locked out of their own computer.

  28. All problems changing the Password Key on PowerMacs have been eliminated.

  30. Further, "THE BLOCK Setup" is completely Appearance Manager savvy and supports Apple's new Navigation Services.

  32. The "esc" key can be chosen instead of clicking on "Shutdown" to continue the system startup. This makes it easier for Powerbook users and users without a mouse.

  34. Fixed security hole! THE BLOCK accepted key clicks between the Password Key and the click on the "Shutdown" button. Now "Shutdown" has to be clicked immediately after typing in the Password Key. Otherwise THE BLOCK will shut down the computer.

I have endeavored to make THE BLOCK as reliable and stable as possible. Nevertheless, it undoubtedly has bugs of which I am currently unaware. I don't know of any bad ones, but just about every piece of software with more than 20 lines of code has bugs. I use THE BLOCK all the time. However, you - as I - use it at your own risk.

Please contact me if you find any bugs, unexpected behavior, or have a suggestion for a new feature. I welcome ideas, but please keep in mind I can't use them all, or THE BLOCK will need over 4 megs of disk space, and the interface will suffer terribly. Only features which have wide appeal can make it in.
